The rate at which Osteomyelitis develops in humans is rather not critical. However, it is a bone infection that can sometimes be prevented. Of course, many people out there could be infected and not be calculated statistically. Without diagnosis, the exact statistical records will remain unknown. It's complications are severe, but they are sometimes avoidable.
Osteomyelitis, also known as bone infection is usually or mostly caused by bacterial infections and rarely caused by fungal infections. People do have varying risk of infection, however, we aren't born with osteomyelitis.
These bacterial and fungal infections are usually caused by a wound or complications resulting from a surgery. Over 80% cases of osteomyelitis are caused by open wounds. It usually starts with an open wound that's left untreated, which could eventually lead to an infection. These bacterial or fungal infections move through the bloodstream or via nearby tissues to the bone or bone tissue that are eventually affected.
Earlier, I mentioned risk factors, we all have varying risk factors to developing this bone infection. Individuals that are at risk of developing these infections are;
• Diabetic individuals.
• Individuals that use intravenous drugs(drugs that are taken in via vein).
• Removal of spleens, spleens act as blood filters that are responsible for the removal of old red blood cells and platelets. Spleens are very important in the body, however, they sometimes can be harmful to the human body. It isn't a preventable situation.
• A trauma to a particular bone area could eventually result to the bone infection.
SYMPTOMS
• Overlying redness on the skin.
• Pain in specific bones that are affected.
• Fever.
• Weakness, stressfulness.
DIAGNOSTIC METHODS
• They are usually determined by the symptoms shown by patients.
• Medical imaging.
• Bone biopsy are used to examine bone tissues, to check for possible cancerous or inflammatory conditions.
• Blood tests.
COMPLICATIONS
In severe OM cases, amputations are ultimately required. This is as a result of fungal infections, which is rare and yet the most severe.
PREVENTION
Whenever you get injured, especially with deep open wounds, make sure it is treated and looked after regularly. If any irritation is observed on the wound's surface, visit a medical expert.
TREATMENTS
Osteomyelitis cases that result from fungal infections are mostly treated by amputations, it is important to note that there is low risk of death of individuals with OM when they are given proper treatments. Osteomyelitis cases that result from bacterial infections are treated by either surgery or the use of antimicrobial drugs.
I hope you had a nice time reading this article till the end. Thanks, and I will see you on the next one.
